Nested tags in Gmail

by John Bixby on November 29, 2010

For the longest time, one of my biggest frustrations with Gmail and its tagging system was that I use a ton of tags and my list of 30+ tags was starting to get out of control. I liked folder systems in programs like Outlook because I could create sub-folders and wished Gmail could do this too. Well, the other day I learned that you can. I can’t be the only person who wasn’t aware of this, so I figured I’d share what I learned to that others can take advantage of it too.

To create nested tags, all you have to do is go into “settings”, click on “labels”, and then create a new tag with a name that you want to be the top-level tag (e.g. “Marketing”). Then prefix the names of the tags you want to be sub-tags with the name of the top level tag and a “/” (e.g. “Marketing/SEO”, “Marketing/PPC”, “Marketing/Social Media”).

It’s that easy! Now you’ll have the ability to expand & collapse your top-level tags just like folders.
