Twitter – Signal to noise ratio is low, which is why following everyone who chooses to follow you doesn’t work. I use Twitter for news and commentary from thought leaders in my industry. I try to keep my follow list to around 100-150 max otherwise it’s usefulness fades. Tip: don’t follow people who just retweet news you can get elsewhere. Kills me when I see people RT stuff like “iPad 2 released today”. Yeah thanks, I really needed to see that headline 1,001 times today.
LinkedIn – Great to see what friends/connections are up to business-wise. Starting to get into the groups more, but so far have found their usefulness limited. Obviously it’s a great resource for job leads.
WordPress – I use this to host my personal website and post articles when I feel inspired (which isn’t often). I also am building an online marketing community website using BuddyPress. Lots of great out-of-the-box functionality.
Yelp – I like using Yelp to find good places to eat and fun things to do. The Yelp Elite events are really fun and it’s a great way to meet interesting people in the your area – both as friends and business connections.
Tumblr – I try to use this but so far have not figured out anything it’s good for. I’ve seen people use it as a personal website platform in lieu of WordPress.Yammer – We use this at work to let others know what we’re working on, give thanks to people who have helped you or done a good job, and have company-related discussions. I think Salesforce.com’s Chatter is similar to this.
Meetup – Social networking the old fashioned way – in person! All kinds of great groups from professional-minded meetups to fun/hobby groups.
